Hiking Around Aspen Snowmass

Staying in Aspen and Snowmass will offer some of the best access to hiking.  Whether you want to squeeze a hike in before a wedding or have the time to truly explore the Rocky Mountains, there are so many options to choose from.  Take the time to plan ahead and be prepared for whatever the weather may bring.

Hunter Creek Trail - Intermediate - 2.5 to 7 miles

Hikes with Spectacular Views:

Summit Hike - Easy - 1.7 miles- Hike to the top of Elk Camp on the Snowmass ski area and see one of the best views of the Maroon Bells

Crater Lake - Easy - 3.45 miles - Hike to the base of the Maroon Bells the most photographed peaks in North America.

Cathedral Lake - Intermediate - 5.9 miles - A steep hike to a gorgeous basin takes you to the base of Cathedral Mountain and Cathedral Lake

Crested Butte to Aspen or Aspen to Crested Butte - Difficult - 10.3 miles - Venture over mountain passes, along creeks, and soak up the breathtaking views.

 

When to Go: 

Expect snow in the high country until mid May, so bring your microspikes for the snow covered trails. The best time to hike in Aspen Snowmass is from June to October.   During July and August, bring sun protection for the mornings and early afternoon, and rain gear for the afternoon thunder showers.  September thru October can be all types of weather, so dress in layers and be prepared for snow.
